The Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Acting Head of MONUSCO, Ms. Vivian Van de Perre, met in Lomé on 17 January 2026 with the President of the Council, His Excellency Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of a high-level meeting devoted to the coherence and consolidation of the peace process in the DRC and the Great Lakes region. Discussions focused on the future of the DRC and on how mediation efforts, under the auspices of the African Union, can contribute to a peace accepted by all stakeholders.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Ms. Van de Perre commended the mediation efforts led by the President of the Council, the African Union’s designated mediator, and reaffirmed MONUSCO’s readiness to support a coordinated and effective response to the situation in the DRC.
Within the framework of its mandate, MONUSCO remains committed to supporting initiatives aimed at de-escalation, peace consolidation, and the protection of civilians, in support of regional and international efforts toward a sustainable solution.
